The RFID technology consists of 2 major components which are RFID Reader and RFID Tags.

RFID TAGS:

RFID tags are the devices that respond to the radio frequency that emits from the RFID reader. The range, memory and read and write capabilities may vary depending upon the type of RFID tags: 

There are 3 types of RFID tags:

 

  1. ACTIVE TAG:

Active tags are the tags that have their own power supply to share the input signal back to the RFID reader, they rely on their power supply. These tags have the longest range among the three.

  1. PASSIVE TAG:

These are the tags that do not have their own power supply and they rely on the Radio waves coming from the RFID reader for the source of energy. These types of tags have comparatively less range than Active and Semi-passive tags. These are the types of tags that are used mostly because these tags do not require any power source and are cheaper comparatively.

  1. SEMI-PASSIVE TAG:

These are the tags that have their own power supply but they rely on the signals coming from the RFID reader to transmit the feedback back to the RFID reader. 

RFID Readers:

Usually, an RFID reader is directly connected to the computer. RFID Readers can be of different shapes and sizes. They can be as small as a handheld reader and can be as big as a door (as you can see inside the Shopping malls).  

RFID readers consist of 3 building blocks:

 

  1.     RF Signal generator:

Signal generators generate radio waves which are transmitted with the use of an antenna. Also to receive the Input signal which emits from the tag. The Signal generator also has the receiver of a signal detector to process the Information which is sent by RFID tags,

 

  1.     Microcontroller:

We would say that the Microcontroller serves as the brain of the RFID system and plays a crucial role in processing data, controlling operations, and Interfacing with the other components to enable the efficient and secure functioning of the technology.

  1.     Signal Detector (Receiver):

Signal detectors play a crucial role in enabling the detection, measurement, and analysis of RFID signals to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of RFID systems.
