Introduction to Parking Signs:

Nowadays parking signs have become very important to manage the parking as they serve as visual guides and ensure that traffic flow in urban or metropolitan cities is maintained. It’s paramount for motorists and pedestrians to understand the parking signs as understanding them will make it easier for them to navigate their way on the roads.

In this article, we will guide you with some basic and important parking signs and cover topics such as the importance of parking signs, the functions of a few parking signs, and some tips for motorists. So let’s delve into it.

Importance of Parking Signs:

  • Parking signs can have a significant impact on the safety of pedestrians as well as motorists. If the signage indicates the allocated parking spaces, crossings for pedestrians, and the speed limit for the vehicles, it mitigates the potential risk of collisions and accidents. To prevent such incidents, the signage should be placed well at sharp turns.
  • If the parking signage is installed, it makes it simple for motorists to navigate when looking for an available parking space, entry/exits, and payment machines. Thus, improving the navigation experience for the driver.
  • A well-maintained & clear signage, makes parking spaces look more professional and appealing.
  • Signage can be significant in displaying the regulations of a particular site. The signage will help people with guiding rules like fire safety codes or accessibility laws.

How Do Some Common Parking Signs Work?

No Stopping:

These signs are installed to indicate that no vehicle is allowed or permitted to stop near that signage unless the conditions of traffic demand it. No stopping signs are usually large and the main purpose of this signage is to maintain road safety and security.

No Parking:

This symbol denotes that motorists are not allowed to stop at that place at any time. But, if they do stop there for some reason they can only stop there for a maximum of two minutes. Also, motorists must not be more than 3 metres away from their vehicles.

Note: Some no-parking zones will allow some emergency vehicles to park at the space.

Parking on private land:

Car parks that are associated with hospitals, supermarkets, leisure centres, shopping centres, retail parks, etc. are usually considered private land and their parking space is managed using the *laws of contract.
* Law of contract: If a motorist chooses to park in a space where the signs are installed, it simply means they are accepting the terms and conditions mentioned on those signs.

Typically, an important sign will be displayed near the entrance to the car park describing who the car park is for, if there are time limits on how long it is possible to stay there, and details of any charges or free periods that may apply. Inside and around the car park, local signage may provide more information that includes how much you will be charged if you fail to adhere to any of the terms and conditions for using the car parking space.

Red and Yellow Lines:

These lines are made on the sides of the road and are used to indicate that the road has certain restrictions.

Double Red line:

A double red line means the vehicles are not allowed to stop on the road for any reason at any point in time. Only emergency vehicles such as the Ambulance are permitted to stop or a vehicle to pick up or drop off a disabled person.

Single Red line:

A single red line has the same meaning as a double red line, but only applies at the times stated on the signs that face the moving traffic.

Single and double yellow lines are indicated to control the waiting time of the vehicles. A single yellow line means that motorists are not allowed to park their vehicles during specified times and no waiting is allowed during the times mentioned on nearby signs if the motorists are in a Controlled Parking Zone. In the case of a Double yellow line, waiting or parking is not allowed at any point of time.

Single Yellow Line:

Double Yellow Line:

*NOTE:  There is a difference between ‘no waiting’ and ‘no stopping’. No waiting means you cannot park near that area whereas no stopping means that the motorists are not allowed to stop near that area. Even if the motorist is inside the vehicle, they cannot stop near the no-stopping zone unless the traffic demands that.

Parking on the footway:

This symbol is used to let motorists know that vehicles are not allowed to park their vehicles partially or wholly on the footways as it can cause inconvenience to pedestrians, children, and disabled people. However, in some areas where the streets are narrow, these signs symbolise that parking is allowed on the footways (partially or wholly)  if it does not affect the pedestrians.

Disabled Symbol:

In this symbol, you will see a person sitting on a wheelchair which means that parking at that particular space is for disabled people only.

Permissive Parking Zone:

These signs permit motorists to park their vehicles as long as they follow the regulations mentioned on the signs. The symbol of ‘P’ denotes ‘no time limit’ in the permissive parking area. Here, vehicles must be parked in the assigned areas, or designated areas, and parking is allowed by the landowners.

Tips for Motorists:

  • They should always look for signage as it will help them to navigate the terms & conditions of that area, the time limits, and whether the area requires any payment before parking.
  • They should always be attentive to road markings as they could provide detailed navigation of the parking space.
  • They should always park in the designated parking space and especially if the motorists carry a blue badge then they need to park at disabled bays.
  • In case of any events or roadworks motorists should always look for the temporary parking signs that indicate the changes in the terms and conditions of the parking.
  • They should keep themselves updated with the local parking regulations so that they do not face any parking issues.

Conclusion:

Parking signs have become very essential to maintain regulations, road safety, and safety in parking spaces. Understanding the parking signs will help motorists navigate effectively for parking, and will also reduce the risk of receiving a parking charge notice. Ultimately, this creates a safer road for motorists and pedestrians alike. Installation of proper parking signs will not only improve the experience of parking but will also improve the overall traffic management system in urban spaces.
